Baron Serafino Amabile Guastella (1819-1899) was born and died in Chiaramonte Gulfi, in Modica, Province of Siracusa, which was, at the time of his birth, part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Guastella received an education with a classical and religious emphasis but which also included an introduction to the French Enlightenment and to British empiricism. He taught in the gymnasium at Modica, then at the Tommasso Campiailla Liceo . He was a leading anthropologist and gatherer of information about the customs and traditions of his native Sicily.
