This study contends that democracy and political change is deeply rooted in the mass media’s ability to become a major agent of political socialization that was capable of mobilizing local populations into changing longstanding African attitudes about politics and election outcome behaviors.

Reviews

Every society aims at change, a change from a condition considered undesirable to something better for the citizenry. The process of course, can be in the form of evolution or revolution seen as the transformation that takes place in all societies. The changes, therefore, refers to the alteration in the organization, of society, its structure, and the functions of groups within the organization. Besides social change is one of the fundamental characteristics of human history, it has always been a matter of interest and intrigue within the societal structure. Communication for development has the ultimate purpose of facilitating the exchange of information that would engender the cultivation of new attitudes, norms and values. A change in the political culture of Nigerians as exhibited by former Governor John Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State is the focus of this work. In response to the June 21, 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State Nigeria, incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi lost the election but against known tradition of Nigeria (Africa) politicians he conceded defeat and congratulated the victorious candidate, Mr. Ayo Fayose of opposition party.
This study contends that as one of the pillars of democracy the mass media are one of the agents of political socialization. The study therefore concludes by saying that in cooperation with other agencies of socialization the mass media are excellent way for communicating and effecting social change. For change to take place in any particular society there is the need for information.
