Having emerged from the War with Spain in 1898 with a new mission - the Advanced Base Force Mission, which in time became the precursor to its amphibious warfare mission during World War II during the 1930s and 1940s. Marine involvement in World War I served as the linking together two historic eras - the first being the Expeditionary Warfare era which occurred from 1898 to 1933, and the Advanced Base Force era which occurred from 1903-1933."
