Concentrates on the migration experiences of Polish legal and undocumented migrants in four European countries (Germany, Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom). It explores why and how immigrants leave their homes, how they develop network ties with fellow nationals or natives, how they seek to improve their living and working conditions, if and how they adapt to the host country and/or how they move on returning to Poland or going elsewhere. The aim of the book is to look at the migration experience from the insiders’ perspective.

Reviews

“This book provides a rare opportunity to hear the voices of migrants from a single country, Poland, fanning out across the older member states of the European Union (EU) in the wake of the collapse of state socialism ... I commend this book for the insights it provides into mobility and the social relations of the newly enlarged EU. It is a fascinating study, with far wider implications that for migration studies alone.” – (From the Foreword) Professor Bill Jordan, University of Plymouth

“ ... The volume contributors are respected researchers, and that is a guarantee of excellence in the research methodology and descriptive analysis applied. A skillful combination of various disciplines approaches and cognitive perspectives constitutes another important asset of the volume. Undoubtedly, the volume is worth to be recommended to a wide audience interested in the study of contemporary social change and the dynamics of international population mobility in particular.” – Professor Marek Okólski, Warsaw University

“ ... Social scientists have long studied the migratory consequences of shifting from a peasant into a market society. Equally important at the end of the 20th century was the shift from command economies to market mechanisms, yet few scientists have investigated this transformation and even fewer studied the impact of this shift into changes in migratory patterns on the European soil at the beginning of the 21st. [This] book edited by Dr. Anna Triandafyllidou gives us this opportunity.” – Professor Krystyna Iglicka, University of Warsaw
