About the author: Nicholas Beattie’s 1985 book on parent participation in Western Europe, Professional Parents (Falmer Press) won a national prize as ‘the best book on education’ of that year. He has been Chair of the British Comparative and International Education Society and joint editor of Compare. After more than a decade of administrative responsibility as Dean of Faculty and Head of Department at the University of Liverpool, he retired as a Reader in Education in 1998.
