Kevin O’Brien obtained his Ph.D. in Citizenship Theory and Quantitative research methodology from the University of Ulster at Magee. He teaches sociology in the Department of Nursing & Health Studies at Letterkenny Institute of Technology, County Donegal, Ireland.

Marshal is the main citizenship theorist in the UK, but this work argues that an alternative theoretical approach, based on the work of Max Weber, more accurately explains the dynamic nature of citizenship Northern Ireland.
