About the author: Gerald Newton graduated with first-class honours from the University of Liverpool, completing his PhD on the German dialects of the Saarland. Since 1971 he has taught at the University of Sheffield. He has published extensively on Luxembourg, and in November 1998 was made a Commandeur de l’Ordre National de Mérite du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg.
