Dr. Laurie Hill is a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary in the Faculty of Education. Her research interests include: student transitions, first-year experiences, and gender and achievement. She has presented at conferences across Canada on the subject of student transitions to higher education. Prior to teaching at the University of Calgary, Dr. Hill was a classroom teacher for 17 years.2010 0-7734-1318-9
This qualitative study provides a framework for planning institutional change and
considering present institutional practices by examining the challenges and rewards
experienced by first-year students in regard to adapting to the academic and social
culture of a large commuter university.
